Finding Joy

Every year we add a new, symbolic ornament to our Christmas tree. A couple weeks ago, while getting sidetracked in the seasonal department at Target, my eye caught the ornament pictured above. Aaaah Target. You go in for paper towels and dog food, and you walk out with paper towels, dog food, a chenille throw, two photo albums, mascara and a neti pot. Man, I love that place.

So yes, I bought the ornament. It stood out to me. I wanted some joy. My encounter with a little paper ornament in the middle of a crowded store lead me to think about that word.

Do I feel joy as 2016 comes to an end? Are we joyful?

Yes, I do. And yes, we are. But in a new way. In a way where it doesn’t always come naturally and it isn’t light-hearted. I have to look a little harder for it these days. In the little moments that bring quiet smiles, the big moments that we celebrate no matter how we’re feeling and quite frankly, all the mundane moments in between.

The good news is, I’m learning, when you seek joy, you will usually find it. And that’s the best kind. Because it’s authentic and cherished. You savor it. And sometimes it’s where you never thought it could possibly be. (hint: It’s not at the mall). For example, I didn’t think I could have a special and meaningful birthday at a hospital, but I did. Sometimes, joy is simply a choice you make.

Patrick, the girls and I are absolutely finding joy this season…not because of our circumstances, but in spite of them.

Find your joy, my friends. It’s there. If it doesn’t jump out at you, then seek it. Not just during the holiday season, but in every season of your life. In the days ahead and in the year ahead, maybe even in one of those quiet, mundane moments, I pray you find joy.

Happy New Year!

P.S. Gospel Music is the Best Music…

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, Opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; Drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day!
